Heartless thieves scamming elderly home owners on Brisbane Northside

Police are warning members of the public to be vigilant after receiving reports of a scam targeting elderly residents on Brisbane's northside.

People posing as tradesmen approach residents and offer to conduct urgent repairs and or remove possums from the victims home.

The urgency of the repairs is stressed with residents- who are aged in their 70s, 80s and 90s- feeling obligated to commence the work immediately.

Payment is required before work can start. The fake tradespeople then enter the home of the victim and steal money or property whilst inside.

The ‘promised’ repair work or possum removal is never carried out.

An 86-year-old Stafford Heights woman was approached by a man on July 28 about removing possums from her roof. The offender demanded payment, entered the residence and stole a handbag.

A 91-year-old Windsor woman was approached by a man and woman about roof repairs, the pair entered the house and stole a sum of cash.

Further afield, police advise that on July 31, a 72-year-old Sandgate man, was approached by a man about removing a possum from his roof. The offender demanded payment entered the dwelling and stole a sum of cash before fleeing.

On July 30, an 86-year-old Banyo woman was approached by two men claiming her house needed urgent repairs. They entered the premises and stole money and a credit card.

Police, appalled by the scam which is targeting some of the most vulnerable people in our community, are appealing for public assistance to help locate the offenders.

To ensure you are not becoming a victim of fraud, it is essential you remain alert and attempt to check the credentials of tradespeople offering unwarranted assistance. If you have an elderly neighbour or family member be sure to advise them of this scam.
