Have a Happy and Safe New Year – and don’t play with fireworks

Caseldine 6 NHW wishes all our residents a Happy and Safe New Year!

In particular, please do not be tempted to play with fireworks or any type of explosives this New Year’s Eve (or at any time for that matter). If you want to see fireworks, please attend a professionally organised event such as in the CBD.

Many local residents would have heard the sound of an explosion at about 7.50 am this morning (31 Dec).

Media reports indicate that a man is likely to have a hand amputated after chemicals exploded at a Hamilton Road home in Chermside West where he was apparently trying to build a rocket based on YouTube videos.

The victim was rushed to hospital with major hand and leg injuries, including a compound leg fracture and the possibility that his hand may need amputating as well as abrasive injuries to his chest and abdomen.

Fortunately, a young boy and an elderly man who were also in the home at the time were not seriously injured.

From initial media reports it sounds like the consequences of this event could have been much more serious.

As a Senior Operations Supervisor with Queensland Ambulance was quoted saying in a Courier Mail online article today:

“At this time of year it’s a pertinent warning, don’t be playing with chemicals, mixing chemicals, even just your household chemicals can cause significant injuries from explosion and detonation.”

This comes just one day after the state government warned Queenslanders about illegal fireworks.
Natural Resources Minister and Member for Stafford Dr Anthony Lynham said sticking to the organised and legal public fireworks display is the safest way to ensure your New Year’s Eve doesn’t end up being a night to forget.

Anyone caught illegally using or possessing fireworks can be prosecuted, with severe penalties up to a maximum $53,380 fine or six months imprisonment.

So please, enjoy your New Year’s Eve but stay safe doing so.
